"led the media pack in deceiving the American people into the war in Iraq, a war based on lies and deceptions perpetrated on the American people precisely by this kind of reporting from the Times and other mainstream corporate media outlets."

We retaliated against Iraq only as a last resort after Bush told the truth about the situation. You have concluded your article with an entirely false premise.

Yes, the medical system was vastly different in 1960. How does that fact illustrate any flaw in what I wrote? You opine government's involvement has been positive, apparently on the basis of the assumption that there would have been no advancements in medicine without government interference. I reject that assumption.

The giant flaw in both your and Rep. Paul's argument is that the medical system of 1960 is vastly different than that of 2012.

It is true that government has been involved, but in a positive way. Namely with research into cures and procedures that are orders of magnitude more sophisticated than a half century ago.

Medical care in this age is a vast collaborative effort of many sub specialties. It is not the same system that we had in the 60's where medicine was pretty much just a doctor-patient relationship.

If your child had leukemia which treatment would you prefer? The 1960 version when it was a death sentence or that of 2012 when most kids with leukemia survive.

Paul's statement is like comparing apples and oranges.

I do suppose that you can fault government for raising costs. Since they give seniors access to health care they increase demand. With an increase in demand you get an increase in cost. Your solution would likely be to let seniors pay for health care on their own. That would sentence 95% of seniors to poverty and bankruptcy.

All correct. The US, Israeli and European governments are all well aware that there is no immediate Iranian nuclear threat, so how do we explain their conduct ? War is the last desperate measure they can take before they are hit by an economic meltdown and riots in the streets at home, and the slow but steady grind of Peak Oil moving into its decline phase.

Urgency is added by the BRIC nations, with Iran and Syria, moving to trade in Yuan, Roubles and Gold instead of US Dollars and Euros. China's holdings of US Treasuries enables them to implode the Dollar any time it chooses, and to dictate the new terms of trade for the world thereafter.

Poised to escape the thralldom of US imperialism are Pakistan (who controls the southern corridor to Afghanistan, while the Russians control the northern corridor), Afghanistan itself, Egypt, Lebanon and Iraq (Al Maliki is sympathetic to Syria, having lived in exile there, and to Iran as a good Shi'ite), Georgia and Armenia, and who knows where else.

US warships have no defense to volleys of supersonic anti-ship cruise missiles should the Russians, Indians or Chinese choose to supply them to Iran. The AEGIS system has never been tested against more than two subsonic cruise missiles simultaneously, let alone in an active war theatre. So it is a big gamble they are playing.
