Here’s an old one that’s been resurrected once more. The New York Daily News says that Saddam Hussein “bluffed” about having WMD in an article entitled, “Former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein bluffed about WMDs fearing Iranian arsenal, secret FBI files show“:

The FBI interrogations of the toppled tyrant – codename “Desert Spider” – were declassified after a Freedom of Information Act request. The records show Saddam happily boasted of duping the world about stockpiling weapons of mass destruction.

Oh, rreaaaallllyyyy…? I’d like to see just exactly what he said. Unfortunately, I can’t because the Daily News doesn’t quote him on that.

The article also says Saddam said other things, like that he would have sought a security deal with the U.S. if it hadn’t invaded as a security guarantee against Iran. But they actually support this assertion with quotes from Saddam’s interrogation at the hands of the FBI, and provide a page from a declassified document summarizing what was said.

I’m placing my bets that Saddam never said any such thing as that would substantiate the headline of this article. This assertion that Saddam “bluffed” about having WMDs has been around for a long time, anyway. It’s a particularly puzzling claim.

I’d like to see someone reconcile the contradiction between the notion that Saddam “bluffed” about having WMD and the fact that Saddam repeatedly denied having WMD. I’ve never seen a single shred of evidence that Saddam ever “bluffed” about having WMD. When did he ever say that in he run up to the invasion in 2003? I’d like to see somebody produce that quote.
