Bill Nye illustrates his ignorance about vaccines in just the first two sentences of his little "Bill Nye Takes On: Anti-Vaxxers" video.

Ugh. I saw this post on Facebook featuring a video of Bill Nye (“the Science Guy”): “Bill Nye Takes On: Anti-Vaxxers”! The post description says, “‘It ain’t about you!’ — Bill Nye The Science Guy explains how anti-vaxxers are putting all of us at risk”.

At about 40 seconds in, after presenting us with the usual trope about supposed vaccine-induced “herd immunity”, you can watch Nye emphasize, “It ain’t about you! It’s about me!”

Here’s the comment I left on the post:

His first words are, “Everybody, you have to get vaccinated.” So right off the bat, Bill Nye is demonstrating his ignorance of the fact that some individuals are genetically predisposed to becoming injured from vaccination; for example, children with mitochondrial disorders or who have the MTHFR gene mutation.

His next words are, “This is 250-year-old technology.” Indeed! The practice of vaccination was invented at a time when scientists had virtually no understanding of how the immune system actually works. Even today, scientists are only really just beginning to understand this and how, for example, vaccinations generally skew the immune system’s functioning toward TH2 immunity (i.e., antibody response), depriving it of the important TH1 immunity (i.e., cell-mediated memory); the role of the gut microbiome in immunity; the gut-brain axis; how vaccines affect gene expression; etc., etc.

As an illustration, the assumption underlying mass vaccination with the diptheria, tetanus, and pertussis (DTP) vaccine is that it would reduce mortality by preventing these diseases. Well, the vaccine is effective at preventing the target diseases, and yet every study to date examining its effect on mortality has shown that DTP vaccine INCREASES the mortality rate. This is because of what scientists call “non-specific effects”; that is, effects of the vaccination other than the one intended. The vaccine does generally result in a level of antibodies considered protective of the target disease, but in doing so weakens the immune system, making the vaccinated child MORE susceptible to other diseases. So children who are vaccinated with DTP might have less risk of death from the target diseases, yet an increased risk of death compared to if they hadn’t received the DTP shot.

Bill Nye is an ignorant fool, as demonstrated by just his first two statements in this video. No sense, then, in viewing it further.

I encourage parents to educate themselves about vaccines by reading what science actually says about it, which is something completely different from what the government and media (and statist propagandists like Nye) say science says says. Go to PubMed.gov and research it for yourself. You can start with the studies on DTP and mortality rates to verify what I’ve just written for yourself.

See in particular the most recent of these studies, which states: “All currently available evidence suggests that DTP vaccine may kill more children from other causes than it saves from diphtheria, tetanus or pertussis.” (Mogensen, et al, “The Introduction of Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis and Oral Polio Vaccine Among Young Infants in an Urban African Community: A Natural Experiment“, EBioMedicine, March 2017. You can find this easily by entering the PubMed ID [PMID] at PubMed.gov: 28188123).

Stop listening to these arrogant, ignorant fools like Nye who treat vaccination as a one-size-fits-all solution, which just plays Russian roulette with our children and lays those predisposed to vaccine injury on the sacrificial altar in the name of a “public health benefit”. Start educating yourself about what science actually says about vaccines, and draw your own conclusions about what decision is right for YOU.

So much more could be said about Bill Nye’s little anti-science, anti-sense video, but it would be superfluous and unworthy of the additional time. I’d have been kinder to him, but his extraordinary arrogance and hypocrisy unearns him any respect.
