Interview: COVID-19 and the Great Mask Debate

by Jun 17, 2020Health & Vaccines, Liberty & Economy6 comments

In this interview, I explain why universal mask-wearing orders aren't evidence-based and the limited circumstances in which wearing a mask would make sense.

Do executive orders for universal mask wearing in community settings make sense? Are they evidence-based measures for preventing transmission of SARS-CoV-2? I tackle these questions in this interview with Bretigne Shaffer on her podcast What Then Must We Do?

I explain what scientific studies really tell us — as opposed to what government officials and the mainstream media say science tells us — about the modes of transmission and the effectiveness (or lack thereof) of masks, and particularly the use of cloth masks, since the public has generally been told under executive orders not to use medical masks, which include N95 respirators and surgical masks.

In sum, I argue that the only recommendation that makes sense and is evidence-based is for every individual to behave in a socially responsible manner and exercise their own informed judgment about whether wearing a mask would be appropriate based on their own unique circumstances.

I was previously on Bretigne’s podcast to discuss how draconian lockdown measures have done more harm than good, as well as how the extreme political responses represent an opportunity for the health freedom movement to get its message through to the public about the need to respect individual liberty and the right to informed consent. Click here to listen to that previous interview.

    Hi Jeremy,
I enjoyed your discussion on the wearing of face masks. You obviously read a lot of studies on the subject so I was wondering if you have seen the studies that are referenced in the article in the link here and what are your thoughts on them.

There is one study from England and one from Germany. I downloaded both but I have not read them yet except for the abstracts.
    Thanks,
    Best regards.

I hadn’t seen either of the three studies, but at a glance, they are all nonsense. The first is a modelling study that is only as good as the input assumptions about mask effectiveness. The second similarly relies on a counterfactual assumption about what would have happened absent a mask order to arrive at the conclusion that the order was effective. The third meaninglessly found that a compulsory mask order was not associated with an increase in social mobility. These are all patently ridiculous attempts to justify lockdowns that do not warrant much attention. Another similar study was recently published that I will be shortly exposing as a hoax. Stay tuned.
