Hey, some potentially very good news for Middle East peace! From the Israeli daily Haaretz comes the headline:
U.S. will drop peace process if Israelis, Palestinians aren't serious, senior American official warns
Oh happy day! “Warns” doesn’t seem like a very appropriate word, though, given how wonderful it would be if the U.S. were to actually do so. “Promises” would be much better.
The Haaretz refers to a Reuters piece in which the key paragraph reads:
A senior U.S. official disputed the notion that Kerry was naive and said the Obama administration was prepared to abandon the effort if it judges that the Israelis and Palestinians are not serious about pursuing peace.
Of course, we shouldn’t be naïve, either, and hold out too much hope that the Obama administration will keep to this promise to abandon the so-called “peace process”, the euphemistic phrase used to describe the set of policies whereby the U.S. and Israel block the implementation of the two-state solution to conflict in favor of which there is otherwise an international consensus that includes the Palestinians.
The message might be intended to make the leadership in the Palestinian Authority shake in their boots. But they should instead rejoice at such news.
