The way I see it, one could read dozens or even hundreds of other articles on a topic and yet still not come away with the amount of knowledge comprehensively presented in one of my special reports.

I am also highly efficient and, despite having scarce resources at my disposal, produce what many of my readers see as an impressive quantity and quality of work.

I didn’t set out doing this work to make money. In fact, because of my decision to try to make a living doing this full-time, my houehould (my wife, son, and I) lived below the poverty line for years. But I do need to earn money from my labors to be able to continue producing truly independent journalism.

Substack takes a hefty 10% cut of paid subscriptions on top of the usual bank transaction fees. Here, we can cut out the middle man so more of my readers’ dollars go toward the purpose it was intended.

Also, Substack is built on the paywall model, whereas my self-hosted platform is designed to avoid that business model since I don’t believe acess to critical knowledge should be dependent on one’s income level.

I do publish on Substack, which has its benefits and conveniences, but the platform I’ve build here is far more powerful.

I am more censorship-proof maintaining full ownership and self-hosting.

I have much more control and functionality with my own site.

Neither a membership program like mine nor online course offerings are possible with Substack. (Coming soon, with your support!)

My self-hosted email newsletter system is incomparably superior.

I have far great analytic capabilities to better understand and serve my audience.

So, while I am glad Substack exists, it’s just not my thing. I prefer greater ownership and control over my publishing platform—and not having a third party take 10% of subscription revenue.

For one, there is the risk of censorship, and I am aware that content creators have been banned from Patreon for communicating regime-unapproved messages.

Also, we can make more efficient use of the financial resources by cutting out the middleman (Patreon and other such services charge a fee on top of the payment processor fee.) It’s less wasteful just to host my own crowdfunding.

Additionally, Patreon is designed in large part to be a publisher. Part of the model is that creators can incentivize donations by offering exclusive content to subscribers. This does not jibe with my own model. I don’t wish to place my content behind a paywall, for one, because the whole point is to get the message out to as many people as possible without such obstacles.

There are many other reasons that I won’t get into, but the bottom line is that it makes much more sense for me to self-publish and have readers come to my website rather than directing them to some third-party site.

To minimize processing fees with recurring donations, you can set it up to donate a larger amount less frequently, such as a $30 donation every 3 months instead of a $10 donation every month.

No. I conduct my independent journalism under my registered business name of Worldview Media, LLC, which is a single-member company and not a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. I have no desire to organize my business under this regulation, including because of the restrictions placed on free speech for registered non-profit organizations, which in the case of my business means me as an individual.
