On March 28, I joined host Pelle Neroth Taylor on TNT Radio for a brief discussion about the origin of the Israel-Palestine conflict. He asked me about the common belief that the United Nations (UN) created Israel, about the Jews’ ancient historical connection to the land, and about the Hamas policy of accepting a Palestinian state alongside Israel.

In answer to Taylor’s questions, I explained why the belief that the United Nations (UN) created Israel is a myth, and how, in truth, General Assembly Resolution 181 of November 1947 neither partitioned Palestine nor conferred any legal authority to the Zionist leadership for their unilateral declaration of the existence of the state of Israel on May 14, 1948.
In that context, I also explained briefly why the partition plan was totally inequitable and indeed premised on a rejection of the Palestinians’ right to self-determination, and why the claim that the neighboring Arab states started the 1948 war by invading Israel is irreconcilable with the true historical record.
Coming to the question of ancestry, I explained how, while Jewish peoples do have a strong ancestral connection to the Middle East, genetic studies indicate that among Ashkenazi Jews, there was a lot of conversion to the religion of Judaism along maternal lines, the point being that a European Jew with no ancestral connection to Palestine can become a citizen of Israel and own property there while Arabs ethnically cleansed from their homes there remain forbidden to return.
I also explained how Palestinians, too, have an ancient historical connection to the land and, indeed, how Jews and Palestinians are very closely related genetically.
Setting aside the question of ancestry, I explained how neither genetic ancestry nor religion can serve as a reasonable basis for property rights, and how the Palestinians’ property rights in Palestine were prejudiced by the British during the Mandate era and by the Zionists’ conquest of the land.
Shifting to more current events, I explained how in 2005 Hamas founder Sheikh Ahmed Yassin announced a shift in policy by saying that Hamas would be willing to accept a Palestinian state alongside Israel, and how Israel’s response to that policy shift was to assassinate Yassin.
Essentially, I explained, Israel’s policies have over the years served to ensure that Hamas remained a radical terrorist organization rather than encouraging the group’s evolution away from armed conflict toward engagement in the political process and diplomacy.
Your information simplifies the situation to a remarkable degree.
My question to the citizens of Israel is: Knowing how you have been subject to pogroms and terrible violations, as in Germany during WWII, how can you possibly justify your treatment of Palestinians? Is this some distorted “eye for an eye” revenge against a group of people who historically did you no harm?
